A nose piercing is one of the most popular piercing locations. Wearing a nose piercing is a great way of self-expression, standing out, and asserting your individuality. Any piercing, but especially a nose piercing can make you feel empowered.

Most nose piercings are trendy and stylish, yet discreet. However, there are many types of nose piercings that you might want to consider getting.

You're in the right place if you’re still indecisive about which type of nose piercing to get. We made this comprehensive guide of what options you have for nose piercings. Let’s get straight into it.

Different Types of Nose Piercings?

Nose piercings are generally divided into three groups according to their location - nostril, septum, and bridge.

When choosing which piercing to get, people also like to consider the cost of getting a nose piercing. In addition to paying for the procedure, you should also keep in mind that you’ll be paying for nose piercing jewellery and aftercare products as well. And all that can add up pretty fast.

Nostril piercings

This type of piercing is the most popular and the jewelry you choose can range from subtle and understated to bold and edgy. There are three types of nostril piercings - standard, high, and multiple.

Standard nostril piercing

This piercing is popular due to its simplicity and sophistication. On top of that, it’s one of the most comfortable nostril piercings that heal relatively fast (from 4 to 6 months). Those are some of the reasons it’s highly recommended to beginners.

The piercing is typically placed on either side of your nostril. A needle with an 18 to 20 gauge is used, though occasionally a piercing gun may be utilized.

High nostril piercing

High nostril piercing unlike standard nostril piercing is positioned at the arch of your nose, which is slightly higher which explains its name. For this piercing, the 18 to 20-gauge needle is also used.

However, the recovery after this piercing can take from 6 to 9 months. And if not done right, the risk of swelling and infection is higher. It’s also not recommended for beginners because it’s quite painful and the aftercare is much more complex than with standard nostril piercing.

Multiple nostril piercing

This piercing as its name suggests, consists of two or more nostril piercings. This means that you can combine two standard nostril piercings or a standard and high nostril piercing. Probably the greatest disadvantage of this type of piercing is the recovery time, which can last up to a year. Also, getting multiple piercings can get pricy.

Septum piercings

Septum piercings are located on the septum, the thin wall that divides the nostrils, as the name suggests. There are four types of septum piercings, each of them different from the other.

Standard septum piercing

Just like with the standard nostril piercing, if you’re a beginner, this septum piercing is ideal for you. It’s a very popular septum piercing, comfortable, and the most affordable of all.

The piercing process can be quite uncomfortable due to the very thin tissue that can’t absorb the pain. However, the recovery time can range from one to three months. And just like with any piercing, the aftercare is crucial so that you don’t develop an infection.

Vertical tip piercing

This type of septum is placed at the tip of your nose. It runs vertically from the bridge of your nose to the area between your nostrils. Due to its vertical position, it is often visible from the top of your nose.

It’s a difficult piercing and it’s not recommended to beginners. Since the piercing goes from the tip of your nose to above your septum, it requires precise technique and accuracy to avoid damaging the cartilage in your nose.

Septril piercing

A septril piercing is a unique combination of a septum piercing and half of a vertical tip. While not very common, they can look stunning when done correctly. The procedure involves running a needle from the top of your nose to the bottom of your septum.

Getting this piercing is a very painful process, so if you can’t handle the pain, this piercing is not for you.

Nasallang piercing

Nasallang is a piercing that pierces through both nostrils and the septum at the same time. The process of getting this piercing is highly painful and it takes up to a year to heal properly. Piercing infections are relatively common, and the risk of rejection is even higher. Therefore, it's important to clean it frequently and monitor for any swelling or increased pain in your nose.

Otherwise, it’s a very unique septum piercing that not many people have.

Bridge piercings

A bridge piercing is a piercing that crosses the bridge of the nose, between the eyes. There are three types of bridge piercings, which include standard, Austin bar and the third eye piercing.

Standard bridge piercing

Located at the bridge of your nose, this piercing is also known as surface piercing. Surface piercings have a higher risk of rejection, so choosing an experienced piercer is crucial. They can ensure the piercing is straight and properly positioned and offer guidance for healthy aftercare.

Austin bar piercing

The Austin bar piercing runs horizontally through the tip of the nose without penetrating the septum or nasal cavity. While not very common, this piercing is visually striking and can appear either delicate or bold, depending on the jewelry you select.

The third eye piercing

The third eye piercing is positioned in the center of your eyes at the top of the bridge of your nose. Unlike other bridge piercings, it is oriented vertically and resembles a unicorn horn.

And there you have all the nose piercing types. Whichever you choose, you won’t be wrong.
